Among Giants, Ancient Redwood Forest

Morning mist moves slowly through this grove of ancient redwoods in Redwood National Park, California. The trees here can live to be 2000 years old and grow to over 300 feet tall. They are part of America's vanishing old growth forest ecosystem. In the last 100 years we have logged about 95% of the old growth forest in the United States. Scientists estimate that if a similar habitat can develop again, it would take at least 500 years. Since the species that depend on these old growth ecosystems cannot survive in other types of forest, their only alternative is extinction. Each stage in the life of the trees, from seedling, to mature tree, to standing snag, to fallen rotting logs, is critically important to the health of this ecosystem.
