Silvered Leaf Monkey and Baby, Borneo, Malaysia
Silvered leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus cristatu) are found in the
countries of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. They
eat only leaves and live in a variety of forest types including primary growth,
secondary growth, mangrove, and coastal. Silvered leaf-monkeys are quite timid
and usually live in troops of 10 to 50 animals. A female is shown here with her
baby. The bright orange coloration of babies makes them easy for other members of
the troop to spot. All of them will come to an infant's defense if it is
threatened. This bright coloration rapidly changes to the gray adult color as
the monkeys age.
