The crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans) is a common and colorful parrot native to eastern and south eastern Australia. They are a medium-sized parrot at 36 cm (14 in) long, much of which is tail. There are seven subspecies, three of which are actually crimson. The red-colored types are generally known as crimson rosella, though there are many other colloquial names.
One morning I observed several of these birds next to a stream eating the berries seen in the foreground of this photograph. I failed to get a decent photo so I returned the following morning to find only this one bird in the same spot. Since most of the easily accessed berries already gone, it's a place to keep in mind for next year.
