Dogwood trees bloom in the low valleys of the Smoky Mountains during the month of April. Unfortunately, millions of dogwoods in the southeastern United States have been killed or disfigured by the disease dogwood anthracnose. This disease is caused by the fungus discula destructiva, which was first found in the region in 1987.
