Loch Ard Gorge, Victoria, Australia

In 1878 a Scottish ship named Loch Ard ran aground here in bad weather. Of
the 54 people on board only two teenagers survived. The wreck is still here
and lies at a depth of 25 meters (82 feet).
This photograph was captured during a brief appearance of sunlight not long
after it stopped raining, Several days earlier we had extremely high winds
and rain during which we saw water from breaking waves splash above the 20 meter (66 foot) high peninsula on the right. The unbelievable
force of the water in such conditions would make short work of any wooden
ship and the people on it. It's amazing that anyone survived the Loch
Ard wreck.
