Dark Falls Detail, Victoria, Australia

Water in this waterfall flows over a dark burnt orange colored rock wall that is largely covered with dark green mosses and algae. The water flow in this photograph is low enough to see how the rocks channel the water into thin rivulets that thread their way down the wall. This is seen much more clearly in the larger image obtained by clicking on the image above. A larger section of the same waterfall can be seen here.

The photograph was captured on a bright partly cloudy day not long before the scene would be ruined by direct sunlight. The bright but indirect light allowed the very clear water to transmit some colors of the rocks and mosses over which it flows. This is seen in the subtle green, bronze and rust color casts. Between the roar of the water, my precarious position atop a boulder, hunger, and considerable fatigue from hiking I did not notice this at the scene. Weeks later while looking at the photograph on a color calibrated monitor I thought these color casts were quite unique and abandoned my preconceived notions of a black and white or split toned monochrome image.
