Christine Falls was named in honor of Christine Van Trump by her father P. B. Van Trump. He and his partner Hazard Stevens are credited with the first ascent of Mount Rainier in August 1870. Christine accompanied her father on an ascent of Mount Rainier when she was 10 years old. She made it to the 10,000-foot (3,000 m) level in spite of a crippling nervous system disorder. She died in 1907 at age 26. Van Trump Creek, which flows over Christine Falls, was named after P.B. Van Trump. A detail shot of the base of the lower tier of this waterfall can be seen here. Several miles upstream Van Trump Creek flows over the much larger Comet Falls.
