The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a North American bird of prey. They
are large birds with a wing span of up to 7.5 feet (2.3 meters) and they subsist
mainly on fish. Bald eagles build the largest tree nests ever recorded for any
animal species. Nests can be up to 13 feet (4 meters) deep, 8.2 feet (2.5
meters) wide, and 1.1 tons (1 metric ton) in weight.
