The Australian King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis) is endemic to eastern Australia, ranging from Cooktown in Queensland to Port Campbell in Victoria. They are found in humid and heavily forested upland regions of the eastern portion of the continent. This includes eucalyptus forests in and directly adjacent to subtropical and temperate rainforests. They feed on fruits and seeds gathered from trees or on the ground.

Coloration of Australian king parrots varies considerably, with some even having a bit of blue near the base of their heads. Males and females have similar coloration, but the entire head and breast of the male is orange.
