White Sands and Snow, New Mexico
This image was captured on a very unusual morning. We watched the full moon in a partial lunar eclipse emerge from below a deck of high clouds before it dipped behind the western mountains. Shortly thereafter the clouds began to disintegrate allowing the sun to break through and illuminate the foreground of this image. Several days earlier a severe winter storm left drifts of snow that still lingered among the dunes, and there was fog or blowing gypsum dust over the distant dunes that nearly obscured them at times. For reasons unknown the sky remained a dull pink for an incredibly long time that morning. These conditions combined to create an odd and otherworldly scene.
