American Avocet, Reflection
The American Avocet (Recurvirostra
americana) is a large wading bird. Its long, thin,
blue-gray legs have given it the colloquial name, "blue shanks". The
American avocet's neck and head are cinnamon colored in the summer and white/gray in the
winter. They are migratory birds, wintering on the
southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico and the United States.
