Coming Home, Osprey

Coming Home, Osprey

The osprey shown in this image is returning to its nest in a huge and old cypress tree snag. The image was captured in the morning as as fog along the lakeshore was lifting. Remaining fog and shallow depth of field helps give a nice muted background to the scene.

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), is also known as the fish eagle, fish hawk, or sea hawk. The diet of this fascinating bird of prey consists of almost entirely fish. The Ospreys are large, reaching more than 2 feet (60 cm) in length with a wingspan of nearly 6 feet (180 cm). Ospreys are found on all continents except Antarctica and always nest near the water.
