Osprey and Chick, "Where's Breakfast?"
The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), is also known as the fish eagle, fish
hawk, or sea hawk. The diet of this fascinating bird of prey consists of almost
entirely fish. The Ospreys are large, reaching more than 2 feet (60 cm) in
length with a wingspan of nearly 6 feet (180 cm).
The osprey chick shown in this
image is very young. Close inspection of the larger image shows a point known as
the "egg tooth" still visible on the tip of its upper mandible. This is used
to break out of the egg shell and disappears as the chick ages. This osprey
chick began asking for food as soon as it woke up from a long
morning snooze.
