The bird shown in this photograph is an American Kestrel, the smallest falcon in
North America. These birds often search for small prey on the ground from a
vantage point high in a tree, or by hovering high above the ground, though
a few
actually catch prey on the wing. The white background in this photograph comes
from shooting against a relatively bright cloudy sky.
