![]() Yahoo Falls and Rhododendron |
|
| Yahoo Falls is located in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. With a drop of 113 feet, it is the highest waterfall in Kentucky. We hiked to
this waterfall on a cloudless evening that made for spotty light in the dense forest. Upon arriving I discovered that in addition to spotty light there was very little water tumbling over the falls. Regardless, I set up my camera to see what I
might make of the situation. Because the surroundings were so lovely, I thought there must be an image somewhere, if only I could find it. I first photographed a few wildflowers. The flowers were fine, but they had nothing to do with my reason
for making the hike, Yahoo Falls. Mounting a longer lens, I thought I might be able to extract an image from the larger overall scene. I photographed falling water hitting rocks below the falls and patterns in the rock overhang under the falls.
Still was not satisfied with what I had done, but seeing nothing else, I started packing up to leave. As I began taking my camera off of the tripod I noticed sunlight beginning to illuminate a small rhododendron on the cliff beside the
waterfall. It was also illuminating a light colored dry rock layer that extended behind the falling water. I finally had my image. . The vertical columns on the right side of the image are made by water falling from Yahoo Falls. The veils of blurred water show only against the darkness created by overhanging cliff. The brightly illuminated rock is situated far enough behind the falling water that it does not get wet, and its brightness makes the water visually disappear in front of it. In the upper left is the small rhododendron that caught my attention. It gives this rather abstract image a dash of color and a better sense of place. |
