Manly Beacon Sunrise, Death Valley National Park

The image shown here was captured before light from the rising sun descended into the bottom of Death Valley, illuminating the high clouds but not the landscape below. Death valley is a land of extremes, even in terms of elevation differences. Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, but it is only 84.6 miles (136.2 km) east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States.
