San Juan Canyons and Monument Valley, Sunrise

The convoluted canyons of the San Juan River set the foreground for a sunrise over the distant Monument Valley. Many Monument Valley formations can be seen from this vantage point, as can Agathla Peak, which is beyond monument valley and nearly forty miles away. There are few places where one can still look across such a vast, and mostly empty, expanse. This image is the result of a last minute decision to return to the spot that we scouted a week earlier. It was 150 miles out of our way, but it ended a wonderful two week photo shoot on a high note. This is especially so because another nice image was captured just minutes before this one, without even moving the tripod. Immediately after this capture we began our long drive home feeling quite satisfied.
