Lower Lewis River Falls and Rainbow, Washington

Bright sun is usually not welcome when photographing waterfalls since it often produces hot spots and harsh shadows. It can work if the sun is positioned to evenly light the waterfall and produce a rainbow in its mist, as was the case when this image was captured. A large dose of pure luck put us at the beautiful Lower Lewis River Falls when conditions were just right. This waterfall is about 35 feet high and three or four times as wide. During high water periods it is an awesome sight that makes a tremendous roar.
