Dean M. Chriss
Photography

We have moved.

My wife and I moved to Australia in December 2022, ending my decades long endeavor to make and sell fine art prints in Northeast Ohio. After we are more settled into our new home I plan to resume enjoying the experiences that brought me to nature photography more than 50 years ago. I currently have no plans to resume print making in Australia.

This website will continue as it has since the 1990s, but updates will be less frequent until our lives get back to normal. When that happens the updates will be a mix of newly captured images and those selected from thousands I captured previously in the United States but never processed or posted.

I do not anticipate having any gallery or art show events, so links to this page will eventually be removed from the website menus. This page will remain to avoid breaking other links and creating a lot of work. The website will continue to use American English grammar, spelling, and date formats for at least the time being.

I first learned of Artisans' Corner Gallery in May of 2017 when a friend gave it a great review. I decided to go to the next First Friday opening and check it out. The gallery had then been open for about seven months and I did not expect much, but I have to say that I was amazed. This is a fantastic gallery with quality art that is beautifully displayed. I have since found that Artisans' Corner Gallery is run by friendly and helpful people who understand art. Don't take my word for it. Please stop in and check it out for yourself. I think you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

Big Creek Park

Chardon, OH 44024

This is the only 2016 outdoor arts festival we participated in. This long running show of nature related art moved to a beautiful new location at the Donald W. Meyer Center in Geauga County's Big Creek Park. The weather was fantastic, there was great entertainment, along with a variety of food vendors and a new farmer's market area.

During July 2016 the Aribica Coffee House will move 42 feet into more than half of the space currently occupied by The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby, Ohio. This news came by way of a 30 day notice from their landlord. It was quite a shock to the gallery owners and the many artists they represent, including me. My prints moved out on June 19. With extremely limited space I moved a display of small prints back to The Art Gallery for the Holiday season and into 2017.

I served as a judge for the 11th annual FOCUS photography competition at Solon Center for the Arts. The show ran from Friday April 8 through May 27. The submitted work was truly excellent and I was glad to help support this worthwhile community arts organization.
Past Events 2015

The 36th East Shore Invitational Art Show and Sale took place on Saturday November 14 and Sunday November 15. As always it was a wonderful and festive show that makes me feel like the Holiday Season has arrived.

On August 1, 2015 we had a wonderful summer day for the Lakewood Arts Festival. Our thanks go to everyone who stopped at our booth. The show hours were 10AM to 6PM. With setup before the show and tear down after, our day started with leaving home at 6:30AM and arriving back home at about 8:20 PM. By the time things were put away we enjoyed a late dinner at around 9:30PM. It was a very long day, but a good one.

I had loads of prints at The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby Ohio for the ArtsFest on Saturday July 18. My wife Lee and I spent the afternoon at the gallery and had a great time. Thanks to everyone who stopped in.

Cain Park - July 10, 11, 12: It was a surprise to find that the enormous tree that provided our space with shade for the last 6 years was gone. It made the show a bit hotter for us, but a wonderful turnout and the great new and repeat customers made it another success. My thanks go to everyone who enables us to keep participating in this show. My thanks also goes to the new and long time artist friends we always seem to find at Cain Park. It is always a true pleasure to see them. The only down side to this show was the rain that started 10 minutes before closing and continued for most of the evening.
Past Events 2014

The 35th annual East Shore Invitational Art Show and Sale was held on November 8 and 9 in Kirtland, Ohio. This show presents a few select works from each of many established regional artists for viewing or purchase. It is one of the first fine art shows of the Holiday season and it is one I always look forward to participating in. From the professionalism of the staff to the breadth of the artwork it's a show I really enjoy. As always, my thanks goes to the incredibly well organized art show staff. They do all of the hard work and make the show a joy to participate in.

The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby, Ohio hosted a very large show of my work from August 22 through September 21, and variations of this show continued in a different part of the gallery into 2015.

I was the The Art Gallery's featured artist at the "Art Walk" in downtown Willoughby, Ohio on the evening of Friday August 8.

This was our first year exhibiting at the Lakewood Arts Festival. The show opened at 10 AM and started out very nicely with lots of people attending. The forecast called for a 30% chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms but black clouds moving at incredible speed from the northwest at around noon told the real story. They brought an hour of wind, torrential rain, and lightening followed by at least another hour of "normal" rain that quashed the show in the middle of the day. Some artists had damage and closed early. We only lost some packing materials and stayed until the show ended at 6 PM. I'd like to thank everyone who came to the show that day, especially two brave souls who came to out booth and made purchases during the deluge!

I had over 100 different matted prints available in The Art Gallery in Historic downtown Willoughby Ohio during the Willoughby ArtsFest on Saturday July 19. It rained nearly all day but an amazing number of people turned out in spite of the bad weather.

I had the good fortune to exhibit my work at the Cain Park Arts Festival for the 6th consecutive year in 2014. There is a lot I could say about this event, but what really sets it apart is the level of genuine care the entire staff has for the participating artists. It's truly appreciated. My thanks goes to all of them, and to the many people who stopped at our booth this year.

I participated in a four artist show and sale with Lee Tobin, Jeff Jones, and Marcello Mellino between May 9 and July 7 at the Willoughby Hills Community Center Gallery in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. The public opening for this event was on Friday May 9 and a great time was had by all. Thanks to everyone who attended and made purchases that help support this community gallery.

The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby, Ohio has represented my work for several years. In 2014 the displays are bigger, and as always they get renewed with different prints about once each month or two. The Art Gallery does a great job for us and I urge you to give their huge selection of art a look. My thanks goes to everyone who has stopped by, and I hope all who purchased my prints are enjoying them.

2013
The 34th annual East Shore Invitational Art Show was held on November 9 and 10 in Kirtland, Ohio. The show features numerous artists, each of whom exhibit a few unique works. It is one of the first fine art shows of the Holiday season and I enjoyed participating again this year. My thanks goes to the best organized art show staff anywhere!
I had a selection of nearly 100 small matted prints and a selection of larger framed prints available inside The Art Gallery for for the Willoughby ArtsFest on July 20. Unfortunately my wife and I were unable to attend due to a severe storm and flooding that affected our home.
The 75th annual Cain Park Arts Festival on July 12, 13, and 14 was a good show. Seeing numerous friends among the artists, patrons, and staff always makes this festival feel like home. We thank everyone who stopped at our booth, except the throngs of biting flies that visited the festival for the first time ever this year. Special thanks goes to the Cain Park staff whose are always available at a moment's notice, and who are more than willing to help with any problem. There is truly no other show that offers this level of friendly assistance. Thanks!

Art by the Falls 30th anniversary festival in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, was a great show for us. I thought our remote location might decrease the traffic, but that definitely was not the case, and the serene wooded setting was enjoyed by everyone, including Lee and I. As always, a big "Thanks" goes to the Valley Art Center staff, especially Kirk. He keeps what could easily be a tangled logistical nightmare of over 125 artists, setting up and tearing down in a small park with limited parking, running like a watch!

The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby: After having a large and varying display of over 40 framed prints and over 80 smaller matted images at the Art Gallery since November 2012, we considerably reduced the number of framed prints on display over the Memorial Day weekend in preparation for our early summer arts festivals. It's worth noting that the prints on display in the gallery are different than those we'll have at our early summer shows, so check out both!
2012
The Art Gallery in historic downtown Willoughby, Ohio held an opening for artist Brian Jones and I on November 30 from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM. My thanks goes to everyone who attended. My prints will be in the gallery through December and into the New Year.

The South Wing Gallery at St. Paul's Episcopal Church from September 14 to December 2 will feature the work of four artists including myself. This magnificent English Gothic church has been a landmark in the Cleveland area since the construction of its 125 foot tall tower was completed in 1929. The south wing of the church has been operated as a gallery for more than 20 years and features three to four shows annually. The opening reception is on Friday September 14 from 5 PM - 7 PM at 2747 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44106.

The 33rd annual East Shore Invitational Art Show was held on November 10 and 11 in Kirtland, Ohio. My thanks goes to the organizers for the hard work that makes it so easy for the artists. This is a show I enjoy doing and I hope to be back again next year.

The West Woods Nature Arts Festival was held on August 4 and 5. I was be the show's featured artist this year which gave my wife Lee and I a great space in the nature center. We were both happy for that on Sunday morning when a big storm with heavy rains moved through. I'm told the raffle for my Eastern Amberwing on Water Lily print raised quite a bit of money for the Geauga County park system's nature education and conservation programs, so I'm happy about the results. Our thanks goes to everyone who stopped by our exhibit.

The Cain Park Arts Festival on July 13 - 15 was a great show for us this year in spite of a gloomy and mostly incorrect weekend weather forecast. Friday and Saturday were warm and dry, though we did endure an hour of heavy rain on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately our tent kept the rain out like it's supposed to and the crowd was back in force as soon as the rain stopped. Our thanks goes to everyone who stopped by at our booth, especially those who braved the rain and heat after it stopped on Sunday.

Art by the Falls 2012 was held on on June 9 and 10. This was our third year at Art by the Falls. As usual it was a wonderful show, but this year we enjoyed clear blue skies along with some dust, and it seemed like attendance was through the roof! Our thanks to Kirk, the entire Valley Art Center staff, and all of the people who stopped by at our booth for making this show such a success.
2011
Valley Art Center 40th Annual Juried Exhibition: Every year the Valley Art Center in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, invites artists within a 250-mile radius to submit their work to be considered for this gallery exhibit. The result is a wonderful collection of local talent, showcasing many mediums. I was proud to have my work in the exhibit again this year and I hope you had a chance to stop in. The opening reception was Friday November 4th from 6 pm - 8 pm and is always free and open to the public. The show ran until December 14th. Valley Art Center is located at 155 Bell Street, Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44022. Gallery hours are 10 am – 4 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am – 2 pm Saturday.

The 32nd East Shore Invitational Art Show on November 12 and 13 was wonderful, and one of the best organized events around. I hope you were able to attend, but if not I hope we'll see you there next year.

Our first time ever at The West Woods Nature Arts Festival couldn't have been better. I was honored to receive the 2011 "best of show" award, and I'll return in 2012 as the festival's featured artist. This is a unique show because all of the artwork is nature oriented and the show proceeds help further nature education and conservation in the Geauga County park system. I hope you’ll plan to attend next August.

We spent July 16, the day of the Willoughby ArtsFest at the Art Gallery. We had a good time, and the day was topped off by meeting an old high school friend I hadn't seen in about 40 years. For those in the area who might not know, the Art Gallery is on Erie Street, right in the middle of historic downtown Willoughby, Ohio. They have lots of unique things, from painting to sculpture to clothing, to photography. Check it out sometime!

We had warm days and blue skies for the Cain Park Arts Festival in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, this year. We met some wonderful people among the other artists and show attendees, in addition to seeing a few old friends. With about 150 artists from around the world there was some amazing art at the show, and as always the Cain Park staff made the show a joy to participate in.

The Waterloo 7 Gallery in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, hosted a great indoor and outdoor art show on Sunday June 26. As always, there were numerous works in the gallery, including a few of mine, and artist's displaying their work in tents outside the gallery. It was a nice sunny day (for a change) and everyone had a great time.

Art by the Falls 2011 on June 11 and 12 turned out great in spite of threatening weather that ranged from sweltering on Saturday to cold and breezy on Sunday. The Valley Art Center staff, who work their tails off behind the scenes every year, make Art by the Falls a success for everyone. Given the quality of all the the paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs displayed by artists from across the United States, I was very happy to receive the third place award for 2-dimensional art this year. My wife, Lee, deserves credit for her perfectionist-level archival mounting and matting of all the photographs. No one notices a great matting job but everybody notices a bad one. She also takes care of all the "business stuff" that makes everything happen.

A large exhibition of my images titled "Photographs from American Parklands" ran for the month of May 2011 at the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Nature Center. We got a lots of great comments, people seemed to enjoy it, and some learned a little about the diversity of America's remaining natural landscape and its wildlife. That was the point of doing the exhibit, so I think it was a success. My thanks to the Cleveland Metroparks and everyone who works at the North Chagrin Nature Center for hosting this.
